History of Barbecue Itinerary

Texas BBQ roots can be traced right here to the Coastal Bend. Beginning with the herds of bison roaming the region to the nearly thirty thousand head of cattle husbanded at the Presidio La Bahia, this region is where Texas barbecue began. This itinerary features historically significant places in the Coastal Bend, museums and the right mix of established barbecue joints.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend features the history of ranching in Texas all the way back to colonization. You can also learn to throw an atlatl - a primitive hunting weapon used by early settlers to hunt barbecue.

Afternoon

Mission Espiritu Santo is a beautifully restored Catholic mission that features State Park guides who'll walk you through Texas' early history. The Mission hosted tens of thousands of head of cattle during it's prime and is linked directly to Texas' style barbecue. Located nearby is the Presidio La Bahia, a beautiful Spanish fort established hundreds of years ago to protect the Mission and the surrounding ranch land. Take a selfie on the only land in America that has flown under nine flags.
