Three Fantastic Barbecue Trail Itineraries

Barbecue in the Coastal Bend is about more than amazing brisket and ribs. It’s about a true Texas experience. The itineraries we’ve created show off the fun activities you can do while you visit for barbecue. Explore the history of Texas at the Presidio La Bahía; take your significant other on a different kind of date or visit with friends and check out the local nightlife scene.

History of Barbecue Itinerary

Texas BBQ roots can be traced right here to the Coastal Bend. Beginning with the herds of bison roaming the region to the nearly thirty thousand head of cattle husbanded at the Presidio La Bahia, this region is where Texas barbecue began. This itinerary features historically significant places in the Coastal Bend, museums and the right mix of established barbecue joints.
Morning

Start your day off on the right foot with a hearty breakfast at Ramsey's Restaurant. You can't go wrong with the morning staples on their menu like huge waffles, western omelettes, and made-from-scratch biscuits with sausage gravy. The Museum of the Coastal Bend features the history of ranching in Texas all the way back to colonization. You can also learn to throw an atlatl - a primitive hunting weapon used by early settlers to hunt barbecue.

Founded in 1882, it is the oldest deli in Texas and they still churn out their favorites like the chicken salad melt and Italian po-boy daily. Mission Espiritu Santo is a beautifully restored Catholic mission that features State Park guides who'll walk you through Texas' early history. The Mission hosted tens of thousands of head of cattle during it's prime and is linked directly to Texas' style barbecue. Located nearby is the Presidio La Bahia, a beautiful Spanish fort established hundreds of years ago to protect the Mission and the surrounding ranch land. Take a selfie on the only land in America that has flown under nine flags.
